Evidence supporting the use of: Black currant
For the health condition: Congestion (lungs)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Black currant (Ribes nigrum) has a history of use in traditional European herbal medicine, particularly for respiratory ailments such as lung congestion and coughs. Traditionally, both the berries and leaves have been used in teas and syrups believed to help soothe sore throats, reduce inflammation, and alleviate congestion. The rationale behind this usage is largely based on the plant’s content of vitamin C, anthocyanins, and other polyphenolic compounds, which are thought to provide antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. Folk remedies sometimes employed black currant for chest colds and bronchitis, though these claims are not well-documented in rigorous historical texts.
From a scientific standpoint, there is limited direct evidence supporting black currant’s efficacy for lung congestion. Some laboratory studies suggest that extracts of black currant possess anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties, which could theoretically be beneficial in respiratory tract infections. For example, black currant anthocyanins have shown some ability to inhibit the release of inflammatory mediators in vitro. However, clinical studies specifically evaluating its effects on lung congestion in humans are lacking. Thus, while traditional use exists and is supported by the plant’s general anti-inflammatory profile, robust scientific validation for this specific indication is minimal.
