Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Aloe vera is traditionally used in some cultures as a remedy for respiratory issues, including lung congestion. In traditional medicine systems, especially in parts of Africa, India, and Latin America, aloe vera gel or juice has been consumed or inhaled (as vapor) to soothe respiratory tract inflammation and support easier breathing. The mucilaginous (gel-like) nature of aloe vera is believed to help soothe mucous membranes within the respiratory tract, potentially making it easier to expel phlegm and reduce irritation. However, the evidence supporting these practices is largely anecdotal or based on historical usage rather than on rigorous scientific studies. While aloe vera is well-documented for its anti-inflammatory and soothing properties on the skin and in digestive health, there is minimal direct clinical research demonstrating its efficacy in treating lung congestion. Most available evidence comes from in vitro studies or animal research suggesting aloe’s potential to modulate inflammation. There are no large-scale human clinical trials specifically evaluating aloe vera for lung congestion. Therefore, while aloe vera’s use for this purpose is justified by tradition in some cultures, the scientific evidence supporting its effectiveness for lung congestion remains weak.
