Allyl isothiocyanate is a pungent compound found in plants such as mustard, horseradish, and wasabi. Its use for treating lung congestion is primarily rooted in traditional medicine, particularly in folk remedies that utilize mustard plasters or poultices applied to the chest. The rationale is that the strong, irritant vapors produced by allyl isothiocyanate can stimulate the mucous membranes, potentially causing a reflex that may help clear mucus from the airways or induce mild local hyperemia (increased blood flow), which was believed to aid in the recovery from respiratory congestion.

However, scientific evidence supporting the efficacy of allyl isothiocyanate for lung congestion is limited. Most published research focuses on its antimicrobial or anticancer properties, not on its effects in respiratory conditions. Clinical studies specifically evaluating its ability to relieve congestion are lacking. The use of mustard plasters has declined due to concerns about skin irritation or burns, and modern medicine does not recommend allyl isothiocyanate for respiratory support. Therefore, while there is a historical basis for its use in this context, robust scientific validation is absent.
