Evidence supporting the use of: Phellodendron
For the health condition: Congestion (bronchial)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Phellodendron, also known as Huang Bai in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), has a long history of use as an herbal remedy. It is traditionally used for its "clearing heat" and "drying dampness" properties rather than specifically for bronchial congestion. In classical TCM texts, Phellodendron bark is not directly indicated for treating bronchial congestion or respiratory conditions like cough or phlegm accumulation. Instead, it is more commonly applied for conditions such as infections, diarrhea, and inflammatory disorders, primarily affecting the lower body, urinary tract, or skin. That said, Phellodendron is sometimes included in multi-herb formulas intended to address upper respiratory conditions, but its role is generally supportive rather than primary, and it is not the main herb relied upon for bronchial congestion. There is limited scientific research directly examining Phellodendron’s effects on bronchial congestion. While the plant contains alkaloids such as berberine, which have antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, existing studies focus on other indications or involve cell or animal models unrelated to respiratory congestion. Overall, the use of Phellodendron for bronchial congestion is based mostly on traditional herbal practice and not on robust scientific evidence.
