Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Oriental arborvitae (Platycladus orientalis, also known as Thuja orientalis) has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and other traditional systems. In TCM, the leaves and seeds (often referred to as "Baishu" or "Ce Bai Ye") are used to treat various respiratory conditions, including bronchial congestion, cough, and phlegm. Historically, practitioners believed that the plant's expectorant and anti-inflammatory properties could help clear congestion from the lungs and airways. The traditional use is typically in the form of decoctions, powders, or as part of herbal formulas targeting symptoms of cough, bronchitis, and other respiratory ailments.
However, scientific validation for these effects is limited. Some preclinical studies have shown that extracts from Platycladus orientalis possess anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, which could theoretically support relief from respiratory congestion. Still, robust clinical trials in humans are lacking. The evidence base is therefore primarily traditional, relying on centuries of empirical use rather than modern scientific confirmation. As such, while there is some supportive in vitro and animal data, the predominant rationale for using oriental arborvitae to treat bronchial congestion remains rooted in traditional medicine rather than strong scientific evidence.
