Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Mallow (Malva sylvestris and related species) has a long history of traditional use in supporting respiratory health, particularly for soothing bronchial congestion and coughs. In various European folk medicine systems, mallow flowers and leaves were commonly used in teas, syrups, and poultices to alleviate symptoms associated with bronchial irritation and congestion. The plant contains mucilage, a gelatinous substance that is thought to coat and soothe mucous membranes in the throat and airways, potentially reducing irritation and easing coughing or congestion.

However, while the traditional use is well-documented, scientific research supporting its effectiveness for bronchial congestion is limited and mostly confined to in vitro or animal studies. Some laboratory studies have indicated that the mucilage content may have demulcent properties, but robust clinical trials in humans are lacking. Reviews of herbal medicine often cite mallow as a demulcent based on traditional use rather than modern clinical validation. Therefore, the evidence base is considered weak to moderate (rated 2 out of 5), and its use is primarily justified by tradition rather than strong scientific validation.
