Evidence supporting the use of: Japanese Horseradish
For the health condition: Congestion (bronchial)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Japanese Horseradish, commonly known as wasabi (Wasabia japonica), has been used in traditional Japanese medicine and cuisine, primarily for its pungent flavor and perceived health benefits. In traditional folk remedies, wasabi and other horseradish-like plants are sometimes used to help clear nasal and bronchial congestion due to their strong, volatile compounds that can produce a sensation of sinus clearing. The effect is mainly attributed to the isothiocyanates released when the rhizome is grated or chewed, which can irritate mucous membranes and lead to a temporary sensation of cleared airways.
However, robust scientific studies specifically evaluating wasabi’s efficacy in treating bronchial congestion are lacking. Most evidence is anecdotal or based on traditional use rather than controlled clinical trials. The related common horseradish (Armoracia rusticana) is better studied in Western herbal medicine for respiratory support, but this cannot be directly extrapolated to Japanese horseradish. Overall, while there is a traditional rationale and some plausible mechanisms due to the volatile oils present, scientific validation is minimal, and the evidence supporting its use for bronchial congestion is weak.
