Evidence supporting the use of: Chinese salvia root
For the health condition: Congestion (bronchial)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Chinese salvia root (Salvia miltiorrhiza, also known as Danshen) has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), primarily for promoting circulation, treating cardiovascular conditions, and addressing menstrual disorders. Its use for bronchial congestion, however, is not a primary or common application in TCM. There are some historical references to its inclusion in complex herbal formulas for conditions involving the lungs, but these are generally related to its perceived ability to "invigorate blood" and resolve "stagnation" rather than directly clearing phlegm or relieving congestion. Scientific research on Danshen mainly focuses on its cardiovascular and anti-inflammatory properties, with little direct evidence or clinical trials supporting its use for bronchial congestion. Some laboratory studies indicate that Danshen may have mild anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects, which could theoretically provide minor benefit in respiratory inflammation, but there is insufficient clinical data to validate its efficacy for bronchial congestion. Therefore, the use of Chinese salvia root for this condition is primarily based on tradition, with weak supporting evidence.
