Caffeine has some scientific basis for use in supporting bronchial congestion, although it is not a primary treatment for this condition. Caffeine is a methylxanthine, a class of compounds that also includes theophylline, a drug historically used to treat asthma and other bronchoconstrictive disorders. Methylxanthines act as bronchodilators, relaxing the smooth muscles of the airways and improving airflow. Several studies have demonstrated that caffeine can produce mild bronchodilation and improve lung function parameters such as forced expiratory volume (FEV1) for a few hours after ingestion. This effect is modest compared to prescription bronchodilators but may provide some symptomatic relief in mild cases. The British Thoracic Society guidelines and some systematic reviews note that caffeine can improve airway function and reduce respiratory muscle fatigue, but they do not recommend it as a primary therapy for bronchial congestion.
Historically, caffeinated beverages like coffee and tea have been used as home remedies for symptoms of respiratory distress, likely due to their perceived stimulating and decongestant effects. However, scientific validation for caffeine's use specifically in treating bronchial congestion is moderate at best, and it is not considered a substitute for clinically proven medications such as inhaled beta-agonists or corticosteroids.
