Basil (Ocimum basilicum) has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, including Ayurveda and traditional Chinese medicine, for relieving symptoms of respiratory congestion, such as bronchial congestion. Traditionally, basil leaves have been used as an expectorant and to help soothe coughs and clear mucus from the airways. This is often accomplished through the use of basil tea, steam inhalation with basil, or consumption of basil extracts.

The rationale behind these traditional uses may be attributed to the presence of essential oils in basil, including eugenol, camphor, and cineole, which are believed to have mild anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and bronchodilatory effects. These properties could theoretically support the relief of congestion, though such effects have not been robustly demonstrated in rigorous clinical studies.

While there is some in vitro and animal research suggesting that basil extracts and essential oils may have anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties relevant to respiratory health, there is a lack of high-quality human clinical trials specifically validating basil's efficacy for bronchial congestion.
