Evidence supporting the use of: Angelica
For the health condition: Congestion (bronchial)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Angelica (Angelica archangelica) has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine, particularly in Europe and Asia, for respiratory ailments including bronchial congestion. Traditional healers have employed various parts of the plant—roots, seeds, and stems—as expectorants and decongestants. Its use is documented in texts dating back centuries, where it was recommended for colds, coughs, and to clear phlegm from the lungs. The presumed mechanism is partly due to the presence of volatile oils, coumarins, and other phytochemicals that may mildly stimulate the respiratory system and facilitate expectoration.
However, modern scientific studies validating these effects are limited. While some in vitro and animal research has explored the antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties of Angelica extracts, robust clinical trials evaluating its efficacy in treating bronchial congestion in humans are lacking. Therefore, while its traditional use for this condition is well-established, evidence from controlled scientific studies is minimal. Its use for bronchial congestion should be considered as based on historical practice rather than proven clinical benefit.
