Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Solanum indicum, commonly known as Indian nightshade or "brihati" in Ayurveda, has a long-standing history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Ayurveda and Siddha. It is a key ingredient in classical formulations such as Dashamoola, which are frequently prescribed for respiratory complaints including colds, cough, and fever. The traditional rationale is based on its properties described as "kaphahara" (removing phlegm) and "shothahara" (reducing inflammation). While these uses are well-documented in ancient texts and ethnobotanical surveys, scientific validation is limited. Some in vitro and animal studies have suggested that Solanum indicum possesses anti-inflammatory, antipyretic, and immunomodulatory effects, but most of these studies are preliminary and do not directly address common colds in humans. No high-quality clinical trials have specifically evaluated its efficacy for treating colds with fever. Therefore, the evidence for its use in this context is primarily traditional, with some low-level scientific support from pharmacological studies, but lacking robust clinical validation.
