Evidence supporting the use of: Quercetin
For the health condition: Colds (with fever)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Quercetin is a plant flavonoid present in many fruits and vegetables, and has been studied for its potential immune-modulating and antiviral properties. Laboratory (in vitro) studies suggest that quercetin can inhibit the replication of several viruses, including rhinoviruses and influenza, and may modulate the immune response by reducing the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines. There is some evidence from animal models that quercetin supplementation can reduce the susceptibility to viral infections and decrease the severity of symptoms, including fever. Human clinical trials, however, are limited and have produced mixed results. Some small randomized controlled trials have shown that quercetin supplementation may reduce the incidence or duration of upper respiratory tract infections, particularly in physically stressed individuals, but the overall effect size is modest and not consistently statistically significant. The evidence for its ability to treat colds with fever specifically is weak, and most clinical trials have not focused on fever as a primary endpoint. Quercetin is widely available as a dietary supplement, and its use for immune support is increasing, but current scientific validation for its effectiveness in treating colds with fever remains low. More large-scale, high-quality clinical trials are needed to substantiate its therapeutic role in this context.
