Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Oxystelma esculentum (commonly known as Oxystelma) has a history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in South Asian and Ayurvedic practices. It is traditionally employed for the management of colds, coughs, and fevers. The plant is believed to possess antipyretic (fever-reducing), anti-inflammatory, and expectorant properties according to ethnobotanical records and folk remedies. However, scientific evidence supporting these uses is limited. A few in vitro studies suggest the presence of bioactive compounds such as flavonoids and saponins, which may have mild antimicrobial or immunomodulatory effects, but these findings are preliminary and have not been directly linked to efficacy in treating colds or fever in humans. No robust clinical trials or pharmacological studies have confirmed its effectiveness for these indications. Thus, the use of Oxystelma for colds with fever is justified primarily by traditional use rather than scientific validation, and the supporting evidence is moderate at best, based largely on long-standing herbal knowledge rather than rigorous scientific investigation.
