Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Holarrhena, particularly Holarrhena antidysenterica, is a medicinal plant widely used in traditional Ayurvedic and folk medicine in South Asia. Its primary historical use has been for gastrointestinal disorders, especially dysentery and diarrhea. However, there are references in some ethnobotanical literature to its use as part of multi-herb formulations for treating fevers and symptoms associated with colds, including mild febrile illnesses. The plant contains alkaloids, such as conessine, which have shown antimicrobial activity in laboratory studies, but there is little direct evidence linking these compounds to relief from viral respiratory infections or the common cold. There is no robust clinical trial evidence or modern pharmacological research validating its effectiveness specifically for colds with fever. The support for this use is thus rooted in traditional practices and anecdotal reports rather than scientific validation. As such, while Holarrhena may appear in traditional recipes for fever and cold-like complaints, there is limited justification for its use beyond these traditions, and its evidence rating for this indication remains low.
