Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Glechoma hederacea (commonly known as ground ivy) has a long history of use in traditional European and Western herbal medicine for the treatment of respiratory ailments, including colds accompanied by fever. Historical records, such as those from medieval and Renaissance herbals, document its use as an infusion or tea to relieve symptoms of coughs, bronchitis, and upper respiratory tract infections. The rationale for its use was primarily based on its astringent, anti-inflammatory, and mild diuretic properties, as well as its aromatic constituents, which were believed to help "clear the head" and ease breathing.

However, there is limited scientific validation for these traditional uses. Some in vitro studies have identified anti-inflammatory and antioxidant compounds in Glechoma hederacea, such as flavonoids and phenolic acids, but there are no robust clinical trials or pharmacological studies specifically demonstrating efficacy for treating colds with fever in humans. The evidence is therefore mostly anecdotal and based on folkloric tradition rather than modern scientific research. As a result, its rating for supporting use in colds with fever is low, reflecting the gap between historical use and scientific validation.
