Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Eclipta (Eclipta prostrata or Eclipta alba), commonly known as "Bhringraj" in Ayurveda, has a long history of traditional use in South Asian systems of medicine. In Ayurveda and some other traditional medicinal systems, Eclipta is often recommended as part of polyherbal formulations for treating fevers and related symptoms, which may include colds with fever. The rationale behind its use is based primarily on its reputed “cooling” properties and its role as a general tonic for the liver and immune system, which are believed to help the body overcome infections.

However, while there are a few preclinical studies indicating that Eclipta may possess immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, and antipyretic (fever-reducing) effects in animal models, there is very limited direct scientific evidence supporting its effectiveness specifically for colds with fever in humans. The traditional use, particularly in Ayurvedic texts and folk medicine, is the main justification for its application in this context. Overall, the evidence remains mostly anecdotal or based on traditional knowledge, with a lack of robust clinical trials to validate these claims. As such, while Eclipta is traditionally used for this purpose, the scientific evidence remains weak, and more research would be needed to substantiate its use for treating colds with fever.
