Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Bishop's Weed (Trachyspermum ammi, also known as Ajwain) has been traditionally used in Ayurvedic and Unani medicine to manage symptoms of colds, particularly when accompanied by fever. Classical texts and ethnobotanical surveys note its use as an expectorant and febrifuge, often administered in the form of decoctions or inhaled as steam to relieve nasal congestion and respiratory discomfort. The seeds contain thymol, which contributes to their characteristic aroma and is believed to have mild antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. However, while there is some laboratory evidence indicating antimicrobial effects of Ajwain extracts, there is a lack of robust clinical trials specifically supporting its efficacy in treating colds with fever in humans. Most uses are based on tradition and anecdotal evidence rather than rigorous scientific validation. Thus, while Bishop's Weed is commonly recommended in traditional practices for colds and fever, the strength of scientific evidence supporting these uses remains limited and preliminary.
