Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Avens (Geum urbanum) has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine, particularly in Europe, where it has been employed for a variety of ailments, including colds accompanied by fever. Traditionally, Avens roots and aerial parts were used in decoctions or teas for their purported astringent, tonic, and febrifuge (fever-reducing) properties. Historical herbal texts, such as those by Nicholas Culpeper and John Gerard, list Avens as useful in treating fevers and infections, often as part of mixtures with other herbs.

However, there is little to no modern clinical or pharmacological evidence to support its efficacy for treating colds or fever. Most references to Avens in the context of colds rely on anecdotal or traditional knowledge rather than scientific trials. The herb contains tannins and some volatile oils, which may have mild astringent and antimicrobial effects, but these properties have not been robustly studied or validated in the context of respiratory infections or fever reduction. As such, while Avens has been used traditionally for these purposes, its use is not supported by modern scientific research, and the overall evidence rating is low.
