Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Agastache, particularly species such as Agastache rugosa (Korean Mint), has a long history of use in traditional East Asian medicine, especially within Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). In TCM, Agastache is included in formulas such as "Huo Xiang Zheng Qi San," which is prescribed for conditions involving "external wind-cold with internal dampness," commonly manifested as colds with symptoms like fever, chills, headache, nausea, and digestive discomfort. Historical texts and materia medica from China describe its use to "dispel wind-cold," "transform dampness," and "harmonize the middle burner."

However, while its traditional use for colds (sometimes with fever) is well documented, modern scientific studies specifically evaluating Agastache’s efficacy for viral respiratory infections or for reducing fever are lacking. Some pharmacological studies have identified anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties in Agastache extracts, but clinical trials in humans for colds or flu are essentially absent. Thus, the use of Agastache for colds with fever is primarily justified by traditional historical use, not by robust scientific evidence.
