Pomegranate (Punica granatum) has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda and Unani, where it is valued for its general health-promoting properties, including its supposed ability to prevent or alleviate colds. The fruit is rich in vitamin C, antioxidants (notably punicalagins and anthocyanins), and polyphenols, which are believed to support immune function and combat oxidative stress. Historically, pomegranate juice and extracts have been used as a remedy for sore throats and respiratory infections, and the fruit is mentioned in several ancient medicinal texts as a tonic for overall wellness.

However, while laboratory studies show that pomegranate possesses antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, direct clinical evidence supporting its effectiveness specifically for the prevention or treatment of the common cold in humans is limited. Some in vitro studies have demonstrated that pomegranate extracts can inhibit the growth of certain bacteria and viruses, but these findings have not been robustly confirmed in human trials targeting cold prevention. The use of pomegranate for colds is therefore primarily rooted in traditional practice rather than strong scientific validation.
