Evidence supporting the use of: Lactobacillus brevis
For the health condition: Colds (prevention)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Lactobacillus brevis is a probiotic bacterium that has been investigated for its potential effects on immune function and the prevention of upper respiratory tract infections, including the common cold. Some scientific studies, particularly in vitro and animal models, suggest that L. brevis may enhance mucosal immunity by increasing the production of immunoglobulin A (IgA) and modulating inflammatory responses. Limited clinical trials in humans have explored the impact of L. brevis, especially as part of multi-strain probiotic formulations, on the incidence and duration of colds. For example, a few small-scale studies in children and adults have reported a reduction in the frequency or severity of colds when certain L. brevis-containing probiotics were consumed regularly.
However, the evidence is not robust: most studies have significant limitations such as small sample sizes, short durations, or use of combination probiotics, making it difficult to isolate the effects of L. brevis alone. Meta-analyses of probiotics for cold prevention generally indicate a modest benefit, but rarely focus specifically on L. brevis. There is currently insufficient high-quality, large-scale clinical evidence to firmly support the use of Lactobacillus brevis as a standalone intervention for the prevention of colds. Thus, while there is preliminary scientific rationale and some supportive data, the overall strength of evidence is low to moderate.
