Evidence supporting the use of: Labrador Tea
For the health condition: Colds (prevention)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Labrador Tea (Rhododendron groenlandicum and related species) has been traditionally used by Indigenous peoples of North America, particularly in northern regions, as a remedy for colds and respiratory ailments. The leaves were brewed into a tea and consumed to help soothe symptoms such as sore throat, cough, and congestion. This use is well documented in ethnobotanical literature, with several First Nations groups citing Labrador Tea as part of their traditional pharmacopeia for cold prevention and relief.
However, scientific validation for these uses is limited. Phytochemical analysis shows the plant contains compounds such as sesquiterpenes and tannins, which may have mild antimicrobial or anti-inflammatory effects. But rigorous clinical trials in humans are lacking, and there is insufficient evidence to recommend Labrador Tea as an effective preventive or therapeutic agent for colds by modern medical standards. Most support for its use remains rooted in longstanding traditional practices rather than scientific validation.
Caution is also advised, as high doses or prolonged use can be toxic due to the presence of ledol and other constituents. In summary, while Labrador Tea has a strong tradition of use for colds among Indigenous peoples, robust scientific support is not yet established.
