Green chiretta (Andrographis paniculata) is widely used in traditional medicine, particularly in Asia, for the prevention and treatment of colds and upper respiratory tract infections. In recent years, its use for these purposes has received increasing scientific attention. Several randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and meta-analyses have investigated the efficacy of standardized green chiretta extracts, especially those containing andrographolide, in preventing and reducing the severity and duration of colds. For prevention, some studies suggest that supplementation may reduce the incidence or risk of developing colds, particularly in populations prone to frequent infections, although most evidence is more robust for symptom relief rather than outright prevention. Meta-analyses (such as Hu et al., 2017, and Poolsup et al., 2004) report moderate-quality evidence supporting Andrographis in reducing the risk of developing symptoms when taken at the onset of cold season or exposure.

The proposed mechanisms include immunomodulatory effects and mild antiviral activity, which may enhance the body's resistance to respiratory pathogens. However, while clinical data are promising, limitations exist due to heterogeneity in study designs, dosages, and extract standardization. Overall, scientific evidence supports its use for cold prevention to a moderate degree, but more high-quality, large-scale trials are warranted to establish optimal dosing and long-term safety. Traditional use also supports this indication, but the rating here emphasizes the growing scientific validation.
