For the health condition: Colds (prevention)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Costus (Saussurea costus), also known as "kuth," has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda, Unani, and Traditional Chinese Medicine. In these traditions, costus root has been used for respiratory ailments, including coughs, colds, and asthma. The root is often prepared as a powder or decoction and is believed to possess warming, expectorant, and anti-inflammatory properties that may help alleviate symptoms associated with colds and other upper respiratory tract infections. Despite extensive traditional use, scientific validation for costus's efficacy in preventing or treating colds is limited. There are a few in vitro and animal studies suggesting antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activities of costus extracts, but no robust clinical trials in humans have specifically evaluated its role in cold prevention or treatment. The traditional use, however, is well documented in classical texts and ethnobotanical surveys, particularly in India and the Middle East. In summary, while costus is traditionally used for supporting respiratory health and managing cold symptoms, current scientific evidence does not robustly confirm its effectiveness for this purpose. Its use for colds remains primarily justified by historical and traditional practices rather than contemporary clinical research.
