Evidence supporting the use of: Colostrum
For the health condition: Colds (prevention)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Colostrum, particularly bovine colostrum, has been studied for its potential to support immune function and reduce the incidence and severity of upper respiratory tract infections (URTIs), including the common cold. Colostrum is rich in immunoglobulins (especially IgG), lactoferrin, growth factors, and other immune-modulating proteins that may help bolster the body's defenses against pathogens. Several clinical trials have evaluated colostrum supplementation in various populations, including athletes and children. Some studies have shown that colostrum supplementation can decrease the frequency, duration, and severity of URTIs compared to placebo. For example, a randomized controlled trial in athletes found that those who took bovine colostrum experienced fewer days and episodes of URTI symptoms. The proposed mechanisms include enhanced mucosal immunity and a reduction in pathogen adhesion to respiratory tract membranes.
However, while results are promising, limitations exist: many studies are small, vary in colostrum formulation, and sometimes include populations with heightened susceptibility to infection. Additionally, not all studies find significant benefits. Most research suggests colostrum may be particularly beneficial for individuals at risk of frequent respiratory infections, but more large-scale, high-quality trials are needed to confirm its efficacy for general cold prevention. Overall, there is moderate scientific evidence supporting the use of colostrum for prevention of colds, justifying a rating of 3 out of 5.
