Evidence supporting the use of: Cistus
For the health condition: Colds (prevention)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Cistus (commonly known as rock rose) has been traditionally used in Mediterranean regions for various ailments, but there is also emerging scientific interest regarding its potential to support the prevention of colds. Most of the scientific evidence surrounds Cistus incanus and its standardized extracts, such as CYSTUS052®. Laboratory studies indicate that polyphenolic constituents in Cistus extracts can inhibit the binding of viruses (including influenza and some rhinoviruses) to host cells, potentially blocking infection at an early stage. Several small-scale clinical trials and pilot studies in humans have explored Cistus incanus extracts for respiratory tract infections and common cold prevention. For example, a 2009 double-blind, placebo-controlled study (Kalus et al.) found a reduction in cold symptoms and viral load in the group using Cistus extract lozenges versus placebo. However, these studies tend to be limited by small sample sizes, short durations, and potential conflicts of interest. The evidence, while promising and mechanistically plausible, is not yet robust or conclusive enough for a higher rating. In summary, the use of Cistus for cold prevention is supported by both traditional use and preliminary scientific studies, but larger, independent clinical trials are needed to firmly establish efficacy and safety.
