Evidence supporting the use of: Chlorella
For the health condition: Colds (prevention)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Chlorella, a type of green freshwater algae, is sometimes used as a dietary supplement to support immune function and potentially aid in the prevention of colds. The rationale for its use is primarily based on emerging scientific evidence rather than longstanding traditional use. Several small clinical studies and animal experiments have investigated chlorella's effect on the immune system. For example, some research suggests that chlorella supplementation can enhance the activity of natural killer (NK) cells, increase the production of interferon, and stimulate other immune responses that are involved in defending the body against viral infections, including the common cold.
A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study published in Nutrition Journal (2012) found that healthy individuals taking chlorella for eight weeks showed a significant increase in markers of immune activity, although the study did not specifically measure cold incidence. There are also some in vitro and animal studies showing that chlorella components can stimulate immune cells and increase resistance to viral infections. However, direct evidence that chlorella supplementation prevents colds or shortens their duration in humans is limited and not robust. Therefore, while there is preliminary scientific interest and some plausibility based on immune modulation, the overall quality and quantity of evidence supporting chlorella for cold prevention is modest at best, meriting a rating of 2 out of 5.
