Evidence supporting the use of: Blackboard tree
For the health condition: Colds (prevention)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Blackboard tree (Alstonia scholaris) has a history of traditional use in various Asian medical systems, particularly in Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese Medicine, and folk medicine across India and Southeast Asia. The bark and leaves of this tree have been used in decoctions and powders for the treatment and prevention of respiratory ailments, including colds, coughs, and fevers. In traditional systems, it is believed to possess antipyretic, anti-inflammatory, and expectorant properties, which may help alleviate symptoms associated with colds. However, scientific evidence supporting its efficacy specifically for cold prevention is limited. Most modern research on Alstonia scholaris has focused on its antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory effects in vitro or in animal models, but robust clinical trials in humans addressing its role in preventing or treating common colds are lacking. A few studies have demonstrated the presence of alkaloids and other bioactive compounds in the plant, which may theoretically contribute to immune support, but these findings are preliminary. Overall, while the use of blackboard tree for colds is well-rooted in tradition, scientific validation remains weak. Thus, its use for cold prevention is justified primarily by traditional practices rather than by substantial modern clinical evidence.
