Beta-glucan, a type of soluble fiber found in the cell walls of cereals (like oats and barley), mushrooms, and yeast, has been studied for its potential to support immune function and prevent the common cold. Several randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses have explored the effects of beta-glucan supplementation on upper respiratory tract infections (URTIs), including the common cold. Some studies, particularly those using yeast-derived beta-glucans, have reported a reduction in the incidence and duration of colds in both adults and children. For example, a 2013 meta-analysis concluded that beta-glucan supplementation may reduce the risk of developing URTIs and lessen symptom severity. However, not all studies have found significant effects, and the overall quality of evidence is moderate, with some methodological limitations and variability in dosages and sources of beta-glucan.

While beta-glucan is not a mainstream or standard therapy for cold prevention, its immunomodulatory properties have attracted scientific interest. The evidence supporting its use is stronger than for many other natural products, but further high-quality research is needed to establish optimal dosing and clarify efficacy.
