Arabinogalactans are polysaccharides found in certain plants, notably the larch tree, and are sometimes used as dietary supplements to support immune function and prevent upper respiratory tract infections, such as the common cold. The rationale for their use is primarily based on limited scientific evidence suggesting immune-modulating properties. Some small-scale studies and animal research indicate that arabinogalactans may stimulate the activity of natural killer cells and macrophages, and promote the production of certain cytokines, which are important for immune defense against pathogens.

A few human clinical trials have evaluated the impact of larch arabinogalactan supplementation on the incidence of colds. For example, a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study in healthy adults showed a reduction in the number and duration of cold episodes, though the effect size was modest and the trials were relatively small. The proposed mechanism is that arabinogalactans may enhance the body's natural immune response, potentially reducing susceptibility to viral infections.

However, the overall body of evidence is limited, with few high-quality, large-scale human studies available. Systematic reviews and meta-analyses are lacking, and the existing studies often have methodological limitations. Despite these promising early findings, the evidence does not yet strongly support the use of arabinogalactans for preventing colds, and more rigorous research is needed to confirm their effectiveness.
