Evidence supporting the use of: Lactobacillus reuteri
For the health condition: Colds (general)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Lactobacillus reuteri is a probiotic bacterium that has been studied for its potential to support immune function and reduce the incidence or severity of respiratory tract infections, including the common cold. Several randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses have investigated the effects of L. reuteri and other probiotics on upper respiratory tract infections, particularly in children and adults. The proposed mechanisms include modulation of immune responses, enhancement of mucosal barrier function, and competitive inhibition of pathogenic microbes.
Notably, a double-blind, placebo-controlled study published in Pediatric Research (Weizman et al., 2005) found that L. reuteri supplementation reduced the frequency and duration of respiratory infections in children attending daycare. Other studies have suggested similar benefits, though findings are sometimes inconsistent and often limited by small sample sizes or variations in probiotic strains and dosages. Systematic reviews indicate that while probiotics, including L. reuteri, may reduce the risk and duration of acute upper respiratory tract infections, the overall quality of evidence is moderate and not all studies show significant effects.
In summary, there is some scientific evidence supporting the use of L. reuteri for reducing the incidence or severity of colds, but the evidence is not robust or universally consistent. It is not a traditional remedy for colds, but its use is justified by emerging clinical research rather than longstanding historical practice.
