Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Terpenoids, also known as isoprenoids, are a large and diverse class of naturally occurring organic chemicals derived from five-carbon isoprene units. They are found in many plants and are responsible for the aroma, flavor, and color of various herbs and spices. Terpenoids have been investigated for a range of biological activities, including antiviral effects that may be relevant to treating or supporting recovery from colds, which are primarily caused by rhinoviruses and coronaviruses.

Several in vitro studies have demonstrated that specific terpenoids, such as thymol, carvacrol, and eucalyptol, possess antiviral activity against respiratory viruses. For example, eucalyptol (1,8-cineole), a monoterpenoid found in eucalyptus oil, has been shown to exert antiviral effects in laboratory models and is a common component in over-the-counter remedies for respiratory symptoms. However, the majority of evidence comes from cell culture studies or animal models rather than well-controlled human clinical trials.

While some over-the-counter cold remedies contain essential oils rich in terpenoids, and these have traditional use for symptomatic relief, robust clinical evidence supporting their direct antiviral efficacy in humans is limited. Thus, while there is a scientific basis for further investigation, current evidence supporting the use of terpenoids as antiviral agents for colds is modest and not definitive.
