Tea, in its various forms (such as black, green, or herbal teas), has long been used in many cultures as a remedy to help alleviate symptoms of the common cold. The traditional use is largely based on its soothing effects and the comfort of drinking a warm beverage rather than any specific antiviral activity. There is some limited scientific evidence for certain teas—particularly green tea—containing polyphenols like catechins, which have demonstrated mild antiviral properties in laboratory studies. However, these effects are not robustly supported in human clinical trials for treating or preventing colds. Most of the benefit attributed to tea for colds is due to hydration, helping to relieve sore throat, and possibly mild immune-supportive effects. Herbal teas, such as those containing elderberry or echinacea, are more directly studied for antiviral properties, but "tea" without specification generally refers to Camellia sinensis (black, green, oolong, white), for which antiviral effects are not conclusive.
