Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Southern Elder (Sambucus nigra, commonly referred to as elderberry) has a long history of traditional use for treating colds and flu-like symptoms. More recently, its antiviral properties have been investigated in scientific studies. Elderberry extracts have demonstrated activity against several strains of influenza viruses in laboratory (in vitro) studies, potentially by inhibiting viral entry and replication. A few small randomized controlled trials have evaluated elderberry for the treatment of influenza and common cold symptoms in humans. Results suggest that elderberry supplementation may reduce the duration and severity of cold and flu symptoms, especially when taken at the onset of symptoms. However, these studies are limited by small sample sizes and some methodological concerns. Systematic reviews generally conclude that while elderberry shows promise, more robust and larger-scale clinical trials are needed to confirm its efficacy and safety. Overall, there is moderate scientific evidence supporting the traditional use of elderberry for colds, though it should not replace standard medical treatment, especially for severe infections. Elderberry is generally considered safe for short-term use in appropriate doses, but raw berries and other parts of the plant can be toxic and should not be consumed.
