Pomegranate (Punica granatum) has a long history of use in traditional medicine, including for respiratory ailments such as colds. However, modern scientific research has begun to examine its antiviral properties in more detail. Several in vitro (test tube) studies have shown that pomegranate juice, extracts, and particularly its polyphenolic compounds (such as punicalagins and ellagic acid), possess antiviral activity against a range of viruses, including influenza and other respiratory viruses. These antiviral effects are thought to arise from the ability of pomegranate phytochemicals to disrupt viral envelopes, inhibit viral entry into host cells, and modulate immune responses.

One notable study demonstrated that pomegranate polyphenols could reduce the infectivity of influenza virus particles and impair viral replication. Another study found that pomegranate extract could inactivate several strains of the influenza virus by destroying their surface glycoproteins. Additionally, the fruit's strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties may help reduce symptoms and support immune function during viral infections.

However, clinical studies in humans are limited, and most evidence is restricted to laboratory research or animal models. As a result, while there is a scientific rationale and preliminary evidence for pomegranate's antiviral effects, especially against cold viruses, the quality and quantity of human data are currently insufficient to provide strong clinical recommendations. More rigorous clinical trials are needed to confirm its efficacy in treating or preventing colds.
