Evidence supporting the use of: Mushroom
For the health condition: Colds (antiviral)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Mushrooms, in general, have a long history of use in traditional medicine systems across the world, particularly in East Asian cultures. Various mushroom species, such as shiitake (Lentinula edodes), reishi (Ganoderma lucidum), and maitake (Grifola frondosa), have been used in traditional Chinese and Japanese medicine to support immune health and as remedies for respiratory illnesses, including the common cold. The traditional use is based on the belief that mushrooms can "strengthen the body's defenses" and restore vitality, rather than on direct antiviral activity against cold viruses.
Scientific research has identified that certain mushrooms contain bioactive compounds, such as beta-glucans, which can modulate immune responses. Some laboratory studies suggest potential antiviral and immunostimulatory effects of specific mushroom extracts. However, the category "Mushroom (unspecified)" is too broad, and there is a lack of high-quality clinical trials clearly demonstrating efficacy of mushrooms as a whole for the prevention or treatment of the common cold. Most of the evidence remains preclinical or anecdotal, with only limited, preliminary human data available for specific mushroom species. Therefore, while traditional use is well-established, robust scientific validation for the antiviral use of unspecified mushrooms against colds is lacking.
