Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Mineral ascorbates are buffered forms of vitamin C (ascorbic acid) combined with minerals such as sodium, calcium, or magnesium. The use of vitamin C for the prevention and treatment of the common cold has a long history, initially popularized by Linus Pauling in the 1970s. Scientific interest has led to multiple clinical trials and meta-analyses. According to a 2013 Cochrane review, regular vitamin C supplementation (at doses of ≥200 mg/day) does not reduce the incidence of colds in the general population but does modestly reduce cold duration and severity. In certain groups exposed to extreme physical stress (e.g., marathon runners), vitamin C supplementation appeared to halve the risk of developing a cold. However, once cold symptoms have started, therapeutic supplementation shows inconsistent benefit, with most studies reporting little or no effect on duration or severity. Mineral ascorbates are used as they are less acidic and may cause fewer gastrointestinal side effects than ascorbic acid, but there is no evidence that buffered forms are more effective against colds. Overall, while vitamin C (including as mineral ascorbates) has modest, scientifically documented benefits in reducing the duration and severity of colds when taken regularly, its role as an antiviral for treating colds after onset is not strongly supported.
