Mastic (also known as mastic gum), a resin obtained from the Pistacia lentiscus tree, has been used for centuries in traditional medicine in the Mediterranean region. Folk remedies have employed mastic for a range of ailments, including digestive issues, oral health, and as a general tonic. Its use for respiratory conditions, such as colds, is primarily traditional and anecdotal. There are historical references to mastic being used in herbal mixtures or as incense to alleviate coughs and cold symptoms, likely due to its pleasant aroma and mild expectorant properties. However, scientific evidence supporting mastic’s antiviral activity, specifically against the viruses that cause colds (such as rhinoviruses or coronaviruses), is minimal to nonexistent. The available research has focused mostly on its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects, particularly within the gastrointestinal tract and oral cavity. Some in vitro studies suggest mastic may have weak antiviral activity against certain viruses, but these findings are preliminary and not directly related to common cold viruses. Consequently, while mastic is traditionally used in some cultures for colds, there is little scientific validation for its efficacy in this context.
