Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Ligustrum, commonly known as privet, has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), particularly the species Ligustrum lucidum (nu zhen zi). In TCM, Ligustrum is traditionally used to tonify the liver and kidneys, improve vision, and support general immunity. Its use for colds is primarily based on its reputed ability to strengthen the body and enhance resistance to illness, rather than direct antiviral properties. There is limited scientific research evaluating Ligustrum's antiviral effects against common cold viruses (such as rhinoviruses or coronaviruses). Some in vitro studies have explored immunomodulatory and antioxidant activities of Ligustrum extracts, but clinical trials in humans for the treatment or prevention of the common cold are lacking. Therefore, the use of Ligustrum for colds is justified by traditional practice rather than robust scientific validation. While it may have general immune-supporting effects, evidence specifically supporting its efficacy as an antiviral treatment for colds is weak.
