Evidence supporting the use of: David's Milkberry
For the health condition: Colds (antiviral)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
David's Milkberry (commonly known as Streblus asper) is primarily used in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Southeast Asia, for a range of ailments including colds and respiratory issues. Traditional healers have used extracts from the plant's leaves, bark, and roots for their purported antiviral and antibacterial properties, often administering them as decoctions or infusions to treat symptoms of the common cold and related infections. However, the scientific evidence specifically supporting the antiviral efficacy of David's Milkberry against cold viruses is minimal. Some preliminary laboratory studies have demonstrated that extracts from Streblus asper possess general antimicrobial activity, but these are not specific to the rhinoviruses or coronaviruses that cause the common cold. Clinical trials in humans are lacking. Thus, while there is a longstanding tradition of using David's Milkberry for colds, rigorous scientific validation of its efficacy for this purpose has not yet been established.
