Evidence supporting the use of: Carvacrol
For the health condition: Colds (antiviral)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Carvacrol, a monoterpenoid phenol found primarily in oregano oil, has been investigated for its antiviral properties in laboratory studies. In vitro research has shown that carvacrol can inhibit the replication of several viruses, including some that cause respiratory illnesses, such as human respiratory syncytial virus (hRSV) and influenza viruses. These studies suggest that carvacrol disrupts the viral envelope or interferes with viral entry into host cells. However, most of the evidence comes from cell culture experiments or animal models, rather than human clinical trials. There is limited data on carvacrol’s effectiveness in treating or preventing the common cold in humans, and no large-scale, placebo-controlled studies have confirmed its clinical efficacy for this purpose. While carvacrol is sometimes marketed in natural health products for immune support or cold relief, its use for colds is not well-established in traditional medicine; the rationale is based primarily on its demonstrated antiviral activity in the lab. Therefore, while scientific exploration exists, the strength of evidence for carvacrol’s use against colds in humans remains low, meriting a rating of 2 out of 5.
