Broussonetia species, particularly Broussonetia papyrifera (paper mulberry), have a history of use in traditional medicine in East Asia, including China, Korea, and Japan. In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), various parts of the plant have been used to treat a range of ailments such as coughs, fever, and other symptoms that can be associated with colds. The traditional rationale is based largely on the plant’s purported ability to "clear heat" and "remove toxins," which in TCM terminology can be linked to the symptomatic relief of respiratory tract infections or viral illnesses like the common cold.
There is some modern research that has identified certain bioactive constituents in Broussonetia species, such as flavonoids and phenolic compounds, that exhibit in vitro antiviral and anti-inflammatory activities. However, these studies are preliminary and usually conducted outside of clinical settings. There are currently no robust clinical trials or high-quality human studies specifically supporting the use of Broussonetia for the treatment or prevention of colds or other viral respiratory tract infections. As such, the use of Broussonetia for colds is primarily justified by traditional usage, with limited scientific evidence to support its effectiveness. Further research is needed to establish any clinical efficacy.
