Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Basidiomycota is a large phylum of fungi that includes many medicinal mushrooms, such as Ganoderma lucidum (Reishi), Lentinula edodes (Shiitake), and Grifola frondosa (Maitake). Several mushrooms in this group have a long history of traditional use in East Asian medicine for supporting the immune system and combating infections, including colds. Scientific studies have investigated the antiviral and immunomodulatory effects of extracts from these mushrooms. For example, beta-glucans and other polysaccharides from Basidiomycota mushrooms have been shown to enhance innate and adaptive immune responses in vitro and in animal models. Some studies also suggest potential inhibitory effects against viruses like influenza and herpes simplex in cell cultures.

However, direct clinical evidence supporting the use of Basidiomycota mushrooms for treating or preventing the common cold in humans is limited. A few small human studies and pilot trials report improved immune parameters or reduced incidence of upper respiratory tract infections with some Basidiomycota extracts, but these findings are preliminary and not specific to cold viruses. Therefore, while there is a plausible biological mechanism and some supportive laboratory and early clinical evidence, robust clinical trials are lacking, and the evidence is best considered modest (rating: 2/5). The use of Basidiomycota for colds is grounded in both tradition and emerging science, but additional research is needed for conclusive recommendations.
