Ligusticum wallichii (commonly known as Chuanxiong or Szechuan lovage) has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), especially for promoting blood circulation and treating conditions associated with "blood stasis," such as poor circulation, headaches, and menstrual disorders. The herb is often included in classic formulas like Xue Fu Zhu Yu Tang, which are prescribed for improving blood flow and alleviating pain due to stagnation. The traditional theory holds that Ligusticum wallichii helps to "invigorate the blood" and "dispel wind," which aligns with symptoms of poor circulation in TCM diagnostics.
On the scientific side, modern research has identified active compounds in Ligusticum wallichii, such as ligustilide, ferulic acid, and senkyunolide, that demonstrate vasodilatory, anti-inflammatory, and antiplatelet effects in vitro and in animal models. Some small clinical studies suggest potential benefits for cardiovascular health, such as improved microcirculation and reduced blood viscosity. However, rigorous, large-scale human clinical trials are lacking, and most of the evidence remains preclinical or anecdotal. Thus, while traditional use is strong and some pharmacological data are promising, the overall scientific validation is still incomplete.
