Hesperidin is a flavonoid commonly found in citrus fruits and is frequently used in supplements aimed at supporting vascular health and improving poor circulation. Scientific evidence suggests that hesperidin, particularly in combination with another flavonoid called diosmin, is beneficial for chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) and related circulatory issues such as varicose veins and hemorrhoids. Multiple randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses have demonstrated that hesperidin/diosmin combinations can reduce leg swelling, pain, and symptoms associated with poor venous return. The mechanism of action appears to involve antioxidant activity, anti-inflammatory effects, and improvement of capillary resistance and lymphatic drainage.
Most studies utilize a combination of 450 mg diosmin and 50 mg hesperidin (micronized purified flavonoid fraction), which is considered an effective and well-tolerated therapy for CVI. While hesperidin alone is less studied, some evidence supports its role in vascular protection and endothelial function improvement. This scientific support is recognized in some clinical guidelines for the management of venous disorders, though the majority of studies focus on specific chronic venous conditions rather than general “poor circulation.” Nonetheless, the evidence base is sufficient to justify the use of hesperidin-containing products for circulatory problems rooted in venous insufficiency, earning it a moderate evidence rating.
