Green tea (Camellia sinensis) is widely consumed for its potential health benefits, including effects on cardiovascular health and circulation. The primary active compounds in green tea are polyphenols, particularly catechins like epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). Scientific studies have investigated green tea’s role in improving endothelial function, reducing oxidative stress, and lowering blood pressure—all of which are related to circulatory health.
Several clinical trials and observational studies suggest that regular green tea consumption may modestly improve endothelial function, which is crucial for healthy circulation. Some studies have shown that green tea can help lower blood pressure and reduce arterial stiffness, both of which contribute to improved blood flow. The proposed mechanisms include antioxidant effects, enhancement of nitric oxide production (which relaxes blood vessels), and anti-inflammatory properties.
However, while there is a plausible scientific basis and some supportive clinical evidence, the overall strength of the evidence is moderate to weak.
