Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Mallow (Malva sylvestris) has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine, particularly in Europe and parts of Asia. Its mucilaginous leaves and flowers have been employed for their soothing and demulcent properties, which are believed to help alleviate irritation and inflammation of mucous membranes. In the context of chest pain, historical herbal texts sometimes reference mallow as a remedy for discomfort related to respiratory issues, such as coughs, bronchitis, or mild pleuritic pain, where the sensation of "chest pain" arises from irritation or inflammation rather than cardiac causes. The mucilage in mallow may help coat and soothe irritated tissues, potentially providing symptomatic relief. However, the evidence supporting these uses is largely anecdotal and based on traditional practices rather than robust scientific studies. Modern clinical trials specifically investigating mallow's efficacy for chest pain of any origin are lacking. There is minimal pharmacological data supporting its use beyond its general anti-inflammatory and soothing effects observed in vitro or in animal studies. Therefore, while mallow continues to be included in some traditional remedies for chest discomfort, especially of respiratory origin, its use is not validated by strong scientific evidence.
