Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Bay leaf (Laurus nobilis) has a long history of use in traditional medicine, including in Mediterranean and South Asian herbal systems. In some folk traditions, bay leaf has been used for a variety of ailments, including digestive complaints, respiratory issues, and chest pain (sometimes interpreted as discomfort associated with colds, coughs, or mild bronchial irritation). The basis for its use in chest pain is largely anecdotal, with applications commonly involving infusions, teas, or topical poultices. However, there is no robust scientific evidence supporting bay leaf’s efficacy specifically for the treatment or management of chest pain, especially chest pain of cardiac origin (such as angina). Most of the phytochemical research on bay leaf focuses on its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties, but these findings have not translated into clinical trials or established protocols for chest pain. The evidence rating assigned here reflects the existence of traditional usage but the absence of strong pharmacological or clinical support for this particular indication. Anyone experiencing chest pain should seek immediate medical evaluation, as it can be a symptom of serious, potentially life-threatening conditions.
