Green tea (Camellia sinensis) has been studied for its potential to reduce some side effects of chemotherapy, such as oxidative stress, fatigue, and inflammation. The primary components thought to be beneficial are catechins—particularly epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG)—which possess antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Some laboratory and animal studies suggest that green tea catechins can protect healthy cells from oxidative damage caused by certain chemotherapy agents. Additionally, a few small clinical studies have explored its role in reducing chemotherapy-induced fatigue and maintaining immune function, though results have been inconsistent and sample sizes limited.

Despite these promising findings, robust clinical evidence in humans remains insufficient. Most research is preliminary, often with methodological limitations or conducted in vitro. Furthermore, green tea can interact with certain chemotherapy drugs, potentially altering their effectiveness or increasing toxicity. For these reasons, major cancer organizations do not currently recommend green tea as a standard supportive therapy for chemotherapy side effects. Patients are advised to consult their oncologist before consuming green tea or its extracts during treatment.
